The Native Grass Resources Group was formed in 1994 as a voluntary, not-for-profit organisation. The money we raise – from membership fees, donations, sales of publications, and Government grants – is directed to the achievement of our goals.

What Do We Want to Achieve?

Our aim is to be the ‘hub’ for native grass information, research and education in the southern temperate regions of Australia. Located in South Australia, our main activities include:

  • collecting and collating published information about native grasses and grasslands. This information is available to all interested groups and individuals.
  • encouraging – and, at times, sponsoring – research, particularly into the propagation, uses and management of native grasses.
  • running community education events such as grass identification courses, and forums for farmers, agronomists and horticulturists.

We want to raise community awareness of native grasses by:

  • linking with other groups that are interested in grasses and grasslands, and joining them in lobbying Local, State and Federal governments.
  • holding displays at selected community events to raise awareness of the threats to and benefits of native grasses.
  • hosting field trips to grassy sites.

We publish ‘grassy’ books and other printed materials.

We produce regular newsletters that are dedicated to ‘grassy’ topics. Our other publications include grass species identification sheets and a 112-page grass ID manual. We helped to publish an up-dated South Australian grass Flora. To find out more, click on Publications.

We are interested in using native grass as a ‘lawn’. To this end, how would we go about deciding what is suitable and how to obtain seed or plants.
    Thank you.

Thank you Di for your inquiry concerning the use of native grass as a lawn. Our website should be able to help you even further regarding this matter.
Put your cursor on the heading NATIVE GRASS PROPAGATION and then click Grower Data Base at the bottom of the menu.
The Grass Seed Suppliers and Growers Database is an alphabetical listing of seed suppliers and plant growers that specialise in native grasses. If you peruse their websites you should be able to obtain all the information you require.
